ABS Plugs
An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a system that allows the wheels on a motor vehicle to maintain traction or contact with the road surface while braking, preventing the wheels from locking up and avoiding uncontrolled skidding.
It is an automated system.
ABS generally offers improved vehicle control and decreases stopping distances on dry and slippery surfaces; however, on loose gravel or snow-covered surfaces, ABS can significantly increase braking distance, although still improving vehicle control.
Since initial widespread use in production vehicles, anti-lock braking systems have improved considerably. Recently not only preventing wheel lock under aggressive braking, but also electronically controlling the front-to-rear brake bias. This function, is known as electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), traction control system, emergency brake assist, or electronic stability control (ESC).
This technology not only exists on the main vehicle but also on some trailers. In particular those who carry a significant weight. To control or manage the trailers ABS system an ABS plug is often used to transfer control from the main vehicle to the trailer. This plug is shown in the image above.
Correct installation of ABS plugs is critical to ensure proper functioning of the ABS system on the trailer.
